　　众所周知，每一种语言中的同义一近义词浩如烟海，难以穷尽。英语也不例外。大量的同义一近义词在为译者提供丰富的表达手段的同时也给他们带来了不小的麻烦，经常使他们在翻译过程中举棋不定。主要原因是同一语义群的词项( lexical item)语义差异微妙，各有其用，所以必须各得其所，不能随意乱使。语境不同，同一个汉字往往需要不同的英语词汇，如“杀人狂(a homicidal maniac)”、“工作狂(a workaholic)”、“宗教狂(a religious zealot)”、“健身狂(a fitness fanatic)”。再比如，“解决”一词分别可用solve和settle来表达，但这两个词明显用于不同的语境。settle涉及双方，而solve则不涉及双方。

　　例1

　　要采取应急措施，尽快解决地震灾区用电和救援人员的通信联络问题，保证居民正常供水。

　　Emergency initiatives must be taken/ adopted as soon as possible to solve the problems

　　of power supply and communications among rescue workers in the quake-hit area and to

　　normalize/resume water supply to the residents there.

　　据《环球时报》报道，印度外交部高官表示，印度愿同中国解决两国边境纠纷。

　　According to a report by the Global Times, a high-ranking official from India's Ministry

　　of Foreign Affairs says that India is read,y to work with China to settle the border dispute

　　between the two countries.

　　汉英翻译中的同义词主要是指若干个英语单词共享同一个汉语对等词(equivalent)，如spend(花费)与take(花费)。

　　丽近义词则主要指两类：

　　(一)英语词汇的汉语对等词中有一个字相交叉，如emergency(紧急)与urgency(紧迫)两词的语义交叉点是“紧”，equipment(设备)与facilities(设施)为“设”，bring(带来)与take(带去)的交叉点为“带”; (二)汉英均属同一语义群，如good-looking(好看的)，pretty(漂亮的)，beautiful(美丽的)，handsome(英俊的)。

　　英语学习过程中，英语词汇的简单汉化，导致了汉英翻译中极为普遍的用词不精确的问题。这种现象，再加上汉语象形文字所特有的模糊性，使敏感度不高的汉英翻译者在翻译实践中深感困惑，面对近义-同义词时常常无所适从。

　　鉴于上述原因，初学者在英语学习中首先应多注意比较同义-近义词，因为进行语言比较能培养语言敏感度。其次，译者应该为汉英翻译刻意积累词汇并注意其语境和用法。毕竟，在汉·英翻译中，往往是同义不同用。譬如，“截止日期”与“截止2002年底”中的“截止”，就应根据语境分别译成the cut-off date和by the end of 20020翻译过程中，译者切勿生搬硬套，“汉”冠“英”戴。举“交流”一词为例。

　　人文奥运指东西方文化交融，特别是源自于古希腊的奥林匹克文化与具有悠久历史的中国文化的交流与融合。

　　例4

　　达沃斯论坛创办37年来，已成为国际交流与对话的重要平台，为世界的发展和进步发挥了积极作用。

　　The Davos Forum, which has become a major platform for communication and dialogs between nations

　　in the world during the 37 years since its birth, has been playing an active role in the development

　　and progress of the world.

　　(communication多指通过语言或手势交换思想、观点、情感、信息等，是不可数名词。)
